Laying The Perfect Dinner Party Table

At rhubarb if there’s one thing we know, it’s how to lay the perfect table. Sarah Hammond, our incredible events director and dinner party extraordinaire gives us her tips on creating the perfect table setting.

The key to setting any table ready for the ultimate dinner party is the position of the chairs. Guest’ chairs should be positioned so they just kiss the tablecloth, or if you have chosen not to use a tablecloth it’s best to ensure the chairs sit slightly away from the table so guests feel welcome and the look isn’t too severe on the eye. Your cutlery is also a key feature of the table so make sure it’s polished and gleaming, placed so the neck of each cutlery piece is in line with one another.

As for the crockery and glassware, a big trend in 2018 is the ‘pop of colour’. Be brave and opt for feature pieces such as brightly coloured plates or water glasses; against a plain background this will add the wow factor and elevate your table setting. This year’s pantone colour of the year is ultra-violet and can be used as a subtle table detail through agate place cards or florals.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a darker tone to your table setting, another trend this year is ‘black is the new black’, pairing striking black crockery with bright gold or copper cutlery offers a brilliant contrast on which to showcase your food.

When it comes to table centres simple can still be stunning. You will always get more value for money working with seasonal flowers so at this time of year we love to pair vibrant Ranunculus with foliage from our gardens.

The most enjoyable evenings are relaxed ones, so make sure you set the table nice and early so you don’t need to rush it whilst cooking and are ready to greet your guests when they arrive for a fabulous dinner party.
